Tie2.lt had an opportunity to participate in a press conference with the talents of film ,,Babygirl”: the writer and director Halina Reijn, main actress Nicole Kidman and the main actor of the movie – Harris Dickinson.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Halina, how did you come up with the idea form the movie?<\/em><\/p>\n

Good question. Well, I came up with it because I always wondered how I could sort of integrate all the different parts of myself, of being a woman, and I felt that some parts of my self I really like, and I like to present to the outside world. But some of them I’m incredibly ashamed of. And I’m nervous about. And so I wanted to make a movie. That sort of asks the question if it is possible to love all the different and accept all the different parts of yourself. So that is how I started to write. And then I just wanted to make an entertaining and fun movie as well, but with a darker under current and with an existential question, if you want, if you will.<\/p>\n

Nicole, what was the reason for you accepting this role and challenging yourself?<\/em><\/p>\n

I’ve always been interested in working with Helena, and I wanted to. I just felt like I it was an area. I’d never explored where i twas. In this genre of the thriller nineties genre, but it was a exploration of her sexuality, of her desires of ofher. It was a discovery, in away, of who she was, and it was done on this really sort of roller coaster journey. And it was just completely original, you know, and from the minute I read it, obviously with the title, like BabyGirl, it’s very alluring to start, and when I read the script I read it like I couldn’t stop, and it just went straight in, and I called Helena, and we just talked for well over an hour about all of it, and she was like you totally get it. And that was the beginning of the metamorphosis of the whole project, and then she would shape it and change it as the more we talked and the more were hearsed so, and even while we were shooting because she’s a writer director, which is so wonderful to work with someone that can be constantly, rigorously working on it through the whole production. And then she editedit superfast, didn’t you, Halina? How long?<\/p>\n

Halina:<\/em> Yeah, we had to. We were on a tight deadline, because, of course, we wanted to submiti, to finish, which was also a very nerve wracking, but wonderful in the end process. But, yes, so we had to do it quick! But I kind of love that because I have a lot of energy. So, I kind of, I think it really helps me to have pressure and deadline. But yes, it was a quick process.<\/p>\n

Nicole Kidman:<\/em> Yeah, know, the production of it was very quick, which actually made it very organic. So, the constant, because we didn’t have an enormous amount of time. It was like everyone we could rehearse and talk. We had time leading up to it, but once we were shooting it was like a freight train. I mean, we were just completely which sort of helped, because it take salot of the overthinking out of it. And it’s a very visceral film. And I think that put all of us in a state of at time sex haustion, at time sex hilaration and adrenaline, and all those things really helped.<\/p>\n

Halina Reijn:<\/em> Yes, because we were shooting in NewYork. It’s very costly to shoot there. But we really wanted that because we also wanted to make a movie that felt big, and that you know, that really like takes you in and is seductive in the sense of what kind of world we were creating. So, yeah, the shoot was very limited in the amount of days that we had, and puts lots of pressure on the actors and on all of with lots of locations. Ofcourse we had lots of different locations, so we were jumping all over the city, and we shot a large part of it, which is maybe funny to know at the A24 office which is the film studio that created the movie. So, yeah, that was, and also,you know, to save \u00a0some cost.<\/p>\n

Harris, \u00a0I’m also kind of curious about your origin with the project as well, and I think this dovetails nicely also into Kiriko Sato from Japan’s question, which is Harris? This story is told from the point of view of a character romias well as a director, Halina Reijn,that that is to say, a woman’s point of view from a man’s point of view. What did you think of your character, and what is the key to your understanding and playing Samuel?<\/em><\/p>\n

Harris Dickinson: <\/em>you know Halina and I spoke a lot very early on about this young guy who was still figuring out who he was, you know, very like understand in understanding his place in the world, but also understand in you know who he is with in like a sexual dynamic as well. Right? And I think that particularly now there’s so many different ways a modern man can be, and in the climate that we’re in, it’s very confusing for a lot of people. So, I think that he was kind of battling with that. And then he meets some one who’s very revered in their environment, you know, very respected in a super high position and I think he kind of just goes against that from the start, you know, and doesn’t respect those parameters of a normal like office corporate work place. He kind of just cuts through it. So, yeah, that was interesting to me. I’d never been in that environment, either. I’d never. I’ve never worked in an office environment. I’ve worked in retail and hospitality, and you know, before acting. So, it was new to me to step into that world. I even asked a24 if I could like intern somewhere, and they were like, I don’t know if it’s like legal for you to, for you to go and be an intern. But I was like, I really need to understand. I need to be able to go and I guess that was my entrance, trying to just understand Samuel, as am intern.<\/p>\n

Halina Reijn: <\/em>Yeah, I think we talked a lot about how the movie. Of course, we’re constantly talking about the female gaze and femininity and exploring that. And it’s incredibly important. That’s, of course, step one. But we also really want to stress that. It’s also about masculinity and what that means. And what that means today and what it is for young boys, but also for someone like the character of Jacob, who was played by Antonio Banderas, who is Nicole’s husband in the movie. We really want to shine alight on that too.And just in that sense, of course, it’s more about being human than anything else.<\/p>\n
