Created by the international choreographic duo Gaj \u017dmavc (Slovenia, Lithuania) and Douglas Lee (United Kingdom, Germany), the production follows its impressive premiere at last year\u2019s Klaip\u0117da Festival, which took place on the open-air <em data-start=\"549\" data-end=\"558\">Elingas<\/em> stage. Now, the evening of two one-act ballets moves into the theatre and promises an even stronger visual and emotional impact.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"713\">Destined for Acclaim<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"1177\"><em data-start=\"715\" data-end=\"726\">Reverb\u2019as<\/em> consists of two dance pieces: Gaj \u017dmavc\u2019s <em data-start=\"769\" data-end=\"781\">Audio Unit<\/em> and Douglas Lee\u2019s <em data-start=\"800\" data-end=\"810\">Callisto<\/em>. These are modern ballets with meticulously crafted choreographic structures, where dance, sound, and light merge into a cohesive, hypnotic artistic world. Both works explore the relationship between the human body and sound waves, space, and time\u2014expressed through the diversity of contemporary dance movement, precision rhythm, and the energy of collective motion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1179\" data-end=\"1664\">Premiering last summer at the Klaip\u0117da Festival, the world premiere not only drew large audiences but also received exceptional critical acclaim. Musicologist and professor Daiva K\u0161anien\u0117 emphasized the production\u2019s modern, plastic, and astonishingly flexible dance language, which also incorporates complex and acrobatic elements. According to her, the duets and group scenes convey an otherworldly ritualistic aura, enhanced by pulsating electronic soundscapes and striking lighting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1666\" data-end=\"1973\">Theatre critic J\u016brat\u0117 Grigaitien\u0117 noted the noticeably improved professional level of the Klaip\u0117da State Musical Theatre (KVMT) ballet troupe, highlighting the dancers&#8217; coordination, precision, and the dynamic choreography, where solos and ensemble scenes fluidly intertwine to create compelling dramaturgy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1975\" data-end=\"2159\">&#8220;Modern sounds and exquisitely refined dancer movements are mesmerizing. It\u2019s like a Swiss watch mechanism you can\u2019t take your eyes off,&#8221; wrote <em data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2126\">15min<\/em> journalist Aurelija Ja\u0161inskien\u0117.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2490\">Composer Loreta Narvilait\u0117 highlighted the cohesive integration of choreography, music, and stage visuals, which makes the performance highly impactful and appealing\u2014even to discerning contemporary audiences: \u201cI believe <em data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2392\">Reverb\u2019as<\/em>should become a successful staple in KVMT\u2019s repertoire, especially attracting younger audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2492\" data-end=\"2511\">United by Sound<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2513\" data-end=\"2914\">For years now, the KVMT ballet troupe has been steadily proving its artistic maturity, technical skill, and creative vitality. Internationally recognized, the troupe has successfully staged works by renowned choreographers like Edward Clug, Robert Bondara, and Alexander Ekman, earning numerous prestigious awards. Constantly evolving, the troupe now represents a high standard of contemporary ballet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"3252\">In the first half of <em data-start=\"2937\" data-end=\"2948\">Reverb\u2019as<\/em>, KVMT ballet artistic director and Slovenian choreographer Gaj \u017dmavc presents the entire troupe as a unified organism. \u201cWe named this ballet diptych with the trendy word <em data-start=\"3119\" data-end=\"3127\">Reverb<\/em> because we hope its artistic resonance will echo widely\u2014not just in Lithuania, but internationally,\u201d says the choreographer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3254\" data-end=\"3634\">A former dancer at the Slovenian National Theatre in Maribor and now a freelance choreographer and multimedia artist, Gaj \u017dmavc began working with KVMT in 2021 while staging Edward Clug\u2019s pieces. His creative bond with the Klaip\u0117da ballet grew into a permanent collaboration, and since the start of the 2023\u20132024 season, he has officially served as the troupe\u2019s artistic director.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3636\" data-end=\"4033\">\u201cIn <em data-start=\"3640\" data-end=\"3652\">Audio Unit<\/em>, the title reflects two core elements important to me\u2014sound, which I create myself, and unit\u2014as in the unity of our dance troupe,\u201d \u017dmavc explains. For this piece, he not only choreographed the movement but also composed the music (for harpsichord, strings, and percussion), designed the costumes, and contributed to the visual concept\u2014ensuring a uniquely cohesive artistic result.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4035\" data-end=\"4078\">An Invitation to Discover the Fantastic<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4080\" data-end=\"4521\">In the second half of the evening, renowned British choreographer Douglas Lee, invited by \u017dmavc, presents his new work to Lithuanian audiences for the first time. A graduate of ballet studies in London and a long-time member of the Stuttgart Ballet, Lee has lived and worked in Germany for nearly three decades. Since 2011, he has been a freelance choreographer, creating productions for leading theatres across Europe, the U.S., and Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4523\" data-end=\"4982\">The two choreographers met a year ago in Dortmund while working on the \u201cDa Vinci Mode\u201d project for the North Rhine\u2013Westphalia Youth Ballet. \u201cI liked his choreography, and he liked mine,\u201d says Lee. \u201cWhat impressed me was the Klaip\u0117da theatre\u2019s vision\u2014a young, ambitious troupe with a daring repertoire. When I arrived in Klaip\u0117da, I was amazed. The dancers are open to new ideas and capable of executing a wide range of concepts. It\u2019s a choreographer\u2019s dream.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4984\" data-end=\"5279\">The result of this creative synergy is <em data-start=\"5023\" data-end=\"5033\">Callisto<\/em>\u2014a dance piece that subtly combines abstract contemporary choreography, electronic music, and a futuristic aesthetic. The music was composed by Australian-born, Berlin-based sound artist and producer Nicolas S\u00e1vva, a frequent collaborator of Lee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5281\" data-end=\"5823\">\u201cCallisto is my stage alias and also the name of a Greek nymph and one of Jupiter\u2019s largest moons. Its surface is marked by deep craters, some of which are capped with ice. I asked the composer to reflect nature and water sounds in the music. I also wanted the piece to evoke the feeling that it takes place in a distant future. I\u2019m fascinated by theatre as a place to discover fantastical worlds\u2014maybe even other planets. In this piece, I want to portray a world inhabited by future humans\u2014or perhaps another civilization,\u201d says Douglas Lee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5825\" data-end=\"5939\">The choreographer also designed the minimalist, elegant costumes to complement the performance\u2019s visual aesthetic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5941\" data-end=\"6288\"><em data-start=\"5941\" data-end=\"5952\">Reverb\u2019as<\/em> invites audiences to discover contemporary ballet. It\u2019s a unique opportunity to witness how sound transforms into refined movement, and how movement becomes a story that reaches the emotions.
