K. \u010ciurlionis will unfold in the dance performance <em data-start=\"268\" data-end=\"287\">The Tale of Kings<\/em>, part of the \u201c\u010ciurlionis 150\u201d program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"332\" data-end=\"690\">This is not the choreographer\u2019s first work dedicated to \u010ciurlionis: in 2021, A. Cholina staged a one-act dance performance of the same name based on \u010ciurlionis\u2019 symphonic poem <em data-start=\"508\" data-end=\"517\">The Sea<\/em>. This time, however, the scale is entirely different, as the author herself notes: more than 30 performers on stage, 300 costumes, and a nearly two-hour-long performance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"1152\"><em data-start=\"692\" data-end=\"924\">&#8220;There\u2019s simply no way to tell this story in less time. The theme itself demands such expression. If you dare to take it on, you must do it properly. There are and never will be compromises. In art, it is always either yes or no,&#8221;<\/em> says A. Cholina, speaking about the ambition to depict the highly complex story of M. K. \u010ciurlionis without sparing any resources. Cholina is not only the director and choreographer of the performance but also its librettist.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1154\" data-end=\"1470\">The Tale of Kings is a dance performance that sensitively and dramatically reveals the unique yet still not fully known story of M. K. \u010ciurlionis\u2019 life, the deep and multi-layered world of the artist, and his creativity \u2013 a reflection of his inner world, which was both a divine gift and a source of suffering.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"2009\"><em data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1614\">&#8220;I am touching a theme to which the whole of Lithuania has a personal connection. As my mother said, \u2018this is such a great responsibility,\u2019&#8221;<\/em> Cholina shares. <em data-start=\"1631\" data-end=\"2007\">&#8220;It was very difficult for me to create the ending of the performance \u2013 the kind that all of Lithuania would want. That\u2019s why it will be the ending I heard and that came to me. When you are staging a performance, this awareness hangs over you like a sword. You open yourself to the theme, and certain flows begin to stream through you, which you then transform into scenes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2016\" data-end=\"2087\"><strong data-start=\"2020\" data-end=\"2041\">The Tale of Kings<\/strong> \u2013 the inner drama of an unrecognized artist<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2247\">Cholina says the creative process began with a question she posed to herself: <em data-start=\"2167\" data-end=\"2245\">What would \u010ciurlionis have wanted to tell contemporary people about himself?<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2565\"><em data-start=\"2249\" data-end=\"2540\">&#8220;There isn\u2019t much information \u2013 only a breath, fragments, and some conflicting details. You have to shape all of this, turn it into a performance. And you must say it not with words but through the language of dance, stringing together events and situations we know from \u010ciurlionis\u2019 life,&#8221;<\/em> the director explains.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"3106\"><em data-start=\"2567\" data-end=\"3030\">&#8220;He lived in poverty, with few opportunities. You can read his letters and see the questions: \u2018Have you eaten? Do you have a coat?\u2019 And his small room on Savi\u010diaus Street in Vilnius? No windows, no way to cook food\u2026 All these circumstances prevented him from developing as rapidly as he could have if he had lacked nothing. A talented person always longs for greater horizons. He, too, wanted big cities, major exhibitions, concert halls, audiences, listeners\u2026&#8221;<\/em>Cholina shares the thoughts that inspired the content of the performance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"3470\">According to the director, the conditions \u010ciurlionis endured for much of his life most likely drained him. <em data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3378\">&#8220;An artist must be recognized in time. This is very important. The absence of recognition and the resulting despair, I believe, triggered a disease of the soul,&#8221;<\/em> she reflects, noting that she was able to distill this inner conflict in the performance.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3472\" data-end=\"3806\"><em data-start=\"3472\" data-end=\"3681\">&#8220;\u010ciurlionis did not have the chance to fulfill himself.
