,,Sometimes, you hate what has happened in your life. You say: “It’s terrible.” But I said, “Sylvester, could you have really done it if everything was nice and kind and peaceful and loving?” No, because that’s not the way of the world. The world is survival, and only the strong survive.” – in press conference by presenting ,,Tulsa King” series told the show’s lead star, executive producer, and Hollywood legend, Sylvester Stallone.

In three seasons, we’ve seen tremendous growth, not just of your character, Dwight Manfredi but also the show itself and its storytelling and popularity with audiences. I was wondering, in what ways did the show challenge you as an actor and as an executive producer?

Sylvester Stallone: The idea that you can come up with a gangster film, something new. For example, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve heard, like, “Well, after The Sopranos, that’s it. It’s over. It’s finished.” And it was a great show. So, the challenge is you’re going to be compared against them.

You have incredible focus and ability to wear many hats for the show. What do you say to yourself or keep in mind on set, when it’s go time, that keeps you on track and focused?

Sylvester Stallone: The interaction—the writing. The writing is key. It’s everything. It’s the most difficult I believe of all the arts, uh, compared to anything else. It’s just mind-numbing, trying to keep that organized. Because you want all the characters to actually say something that matters. And I’ll leave it at this because I could go on for hours. It’s almost verbal math. The dialogue has to add up to something.

That makes a lot of sense. And there was a question here about how Dwight loves women. And clearly, you are surrounded in real life by women. How important was it to you to show your character’s level of respect for women in this story?

Sylvester Stallone: I think it’s incredibly important, because that’s my nature. And even with Rocky, whatever, I’ve been telling people for 50 years, it’s a love story. Without Adrian, there is no story. So, when we started out, there was no love in Tulsa King. I was a terrible guy. I was hurting people, I wasn’t married. So, we got together—Terry Winter and Taylor—and said, “Let’s put him in prison. Let him lose his daughter. Let him lose his wife.” In other words, he’s lost everything that could be soft and romantic and thoughtful, and he has to rebuild that. And that’s how we started with the daughter and the new girlfriend and everything else. But it’s incredibly important that there’s always this love, uh, or this need to be in love, to keep that character genuine, that you like him.

Yeah, that’s so great to watch always the dynamic. Next can you walk us through your writing process on Tulsa King. How do you approach writing a character like Dwight?

Sylvester Stallone: Okay, I’ll show you something probably that—let me see if I can find it. We’ll start out with a regular screenplay but you’ll see that it’s literally thousands and thousands of words rewritten. No one’s ever seen this before. So, this starts out with a normal script and this is how much work goes into figuring out, like, oh my God, I have a new idea, I have a new plot, I have this and I have that. This is what drives me crazy, okay? This writing if you really love it, it’s just an incredible mathematical problem. But that’s the process. Once the writing is done, 90 percent of the problems are over.

So you go back to that and write throughout?

Sylvester Stallone: Nonstop. Nonstop. Actually there’s pictures of me, when I’m doing Rocky, I’m writing with boxing gloves on. I’m doing Rambo, my hands are all burned up and I’m in the middle of the desert, in the middle of write- it just never stops. (00:04:58) And this year finally, we’ve got it all together in a fantastic writing crew that I can finally concentrate on acting.

That’s so fascinating. Speaking of writing, your memoir is titled The Steps, which echoes the iconic climb in Rocky which is having its 50th anniversary this year. Tell us what the writing process was like when you sat down and reflected the last 50 years of your incredible career.

Sylvester Stallone: It actually takes you into a place that you thought you had completely forgotten, because time promotes ignorance and forgetfulness. And then when you start to dwell on how did this happen, you couldn’t have done this alone. There had to be something that you are able to look inside of yourself and really see what you are made of and do you have this desire to go on? Do you have the desire to make friends with failure and disappointment and it’s going to be that way. And the chances of you succeeding are pretty much almost zero. But for some reason, I liked that challenge and I just never looked back. But there’s a spirituality—this will sound odd—that I ignored. I thought, oh, you did it all on your own. And then, I thought, the first image of Rocky is the picture in a church, is the picture of Christ. I’m going, did I subconsciously write a story about a broken man, his soul is crushed, he has nothing to live for. And this man has been chosen from everyone to do something that is enlightening, that is hopeful, that gives people an ability to believe in life and love and everyone has a chance. So, what I’m saying here in a longwinded way, in the book, you start to think how did this happen? Instead of saying, I did it all on my own, you go, every person you ever met, every word that you ever exchanged, every fight that you had, every moment that you had with your parents, these are all experiences that led to that happening. If that never happened, I wouldn’t be talking to you now. So, you’re the sum total of everything that’s ever happened. And sometimes, you hate what has happened in your life. You go, “It’s terrible.” But I said, “Sylvester, could you have really done it if everything was nice and kind and peaceful and loving?” No, because that’s not the way of the world. The world is survival, and only the strong survive.

Looking at your journey from Rocky’s underdog to Tulsa King’s Dwight Manfredi, it feels like you’ve been exploring the evolution of masculinity and survival for nearly five decades. What does Dwight’s story let you say about legacy and reinvention that you couldn’t say through your earlier characters?

Sylvester Stallone: I think it comes through experience that, you know, that no man is an island. I know that Dwight had two choices: he could have been really angry and used his threatening persona, personality or he could say, “I’m going to try to make friends with everybody. I’m going to bring people into me and make it a family.” Because he has no family. And I’ve always considered the worst most fatal disease in the world is the disease of loneliness. Isolation is so sad. And so Dwight, at 75 years old, he has to either make that choice or be a bitter man who eventually drifts off into obscurity.

Tie2.lt ,,Sometimes, you hate what has happened in your life.
