At the table, Miguel, played by Javier Bardem, tells the story of how he met his wife Sofia, played by Penélope Cruz. At first, the story sounds romantic, but a far more mundane version soon emerges: on their first date, Miguel was brought to tears not by his future wife’s sensitivity, but by an allergic reaction to her cat. This scene already establishes the tone of Bunker quite precisely – serious matters constantly collide with the comedy of everyday life.

There is more humour in the film than one might expect from a story about the disintegration of a relationship between two people, social inequality, and the wealthy preparing for the end of the world. Yet the humour in Bunker does not turn the film into a comedy. Rather, it brings a certain lightness to a story that could otherwise very quickly become overly heavy and didactic.

At the centre of the film are Sofia and Miguel, who have been married for seventeen years. Both are Spanish and moved from Madrid to London many years ago because of Miguel’s career. He has become a famous and successful architect, while she works in publishing. They have two daughters and live in a modernist house. From the outside, theirs is an almost flawless story of migration and professional success: two people left their country, established themselves in London, and built a life that appears to lack nothing. But Bunker is at its most interesting when it begins to dismantle precisely this flawless surface.

Miguel and Sofia’s marriage is already less solid at the beginning of the film than it might appear to those around them. The distance that has developed between them is not the result of one major event. Sofia is drifting away from her husband, while Miguel does not always understand what has changed in their relationship. Bunker therefore works first and foremost as a film about a long marriage in which the crisis begins well before anyone dares to name it. The casting of Cruz and Bardem is particularly important here. At a press conference at the Venice Film Festival, Zeller noted that he wrote the screenplay specifically for them, and the actors’ real-life partnership lends an additional naturalness to their scenes. Critics in Venice were fairly unanimous in highlighting their chemistry: even reviews that judged the film itself more harshly often regarded the performances of its two leads as one of its greatest strengths. Their characters’ relationship does not require constant major confrontations – the tension emerges from conversations, pauses, and Sofia’s increasingly evident dissatisfaction with the life they have built together.

This already existing crisis is compounded by a job Miguel is offered. A tech billionaire, played by Paul Dano, wants the architect to design a survival bunker for him. Miguel is attracted to the project both professionally and financially. To Sofia, the very idea seems morally obscene: the wealthiest people are preparing not to solve the world’s problems, but to buy themselves the ability to hide from them. Miguel’s professional decision therefore becomes a personal one as well. Sofia begins to ask not only whether her husband should accept such a commission, but whether a man willing to accept it is still the same man with whom she chose to build a life.

This is where one of the film’s more interesting contradictions emerges. Sofia and Miguel are appalled by the billionaire’s desire to shut himself off from the world, yet they themselves lead an extremely privileged life. Their modernist London home is protected by alarms and other security measures. A conflict with a less affluent neighbour, who installs a window overlooking their garden, further exposes the divide between the values the couple profess and the way they actually live. Zeller himself spoke about this in Venice in terms of an “invisible bunker”: the billionaire’s physical bunker merely makes visible the isolation in which the film’s other characters, in different ways, already live. The Spanish couple’s life in London is also significant in this context. They are not socially vulnerable immigrants – on the contrary, they are successful, affluent Europeans for whom moving to England became part of their professional and social ascent. Yet their Spanish identity never disappears from the film: Bunker is bilingual, with English and Spanish existing side by side, just as the two worlds of their lives coexist – the one they came from and the one they have created in London.

Still, Zeller’s film is not primarily a drama about migration. The couple’s Spanish background instead reinforces the sense that their life has been consciously constructed – another country, a career, a house, a social environment, all deliberately chosen. That is precisely why Sofia’s doubts become so significant: after seventeen years, she begins to question not merely one particular decision made by her husband, but the entire project of the life they have built together. A young American writer also enters this already unstable relationship. His appearance is not simply a mechanism for creating a romantic triangle. He becomes one of the catalysts that makes it clearer that Sofia’s dissatisfaction began much earlier. All of this sounds like material for a fairly complex film. Paradoxically, however, this is exactly where Bunker’s greatest weakness emerges. The questions it raises are more interesting than the way the film answers them. Zeller simultaneously addresses marriage, social inequality, the privileges of the wealthy, fears surrounding climate change and political instability, the power of tech billionaires, migration, and people’s desire to isolate themselves from one another. The bunker is a very convenient metaphor for all of this. Perhaps even too convenient.

More than one critic in Venice took issue with precisely this bluntness. A review by Italy’s RTL argued that the film explains everything and says it out loud instead of allowing viewers to discover its meanings for themselves. Cinematografo likewise criticised its didacticism and its desire to explain almost every metaphor. The Guardian, in an even harsher assessment, argued that the themes of alienation and inequality touched upon by the film remain overly superficial. And that probably describes Bunker’s problem most accurately. The film is not stupid. It simply fails to trust its audience far too often.

When we are presented with a luxurious glass house whose inhabitants are afraid of a neighbour’s window while one of them is simultaneously designing an underground refuge for a billionaire, the metaphor hardly needs further explanation. When a couple who have spent seventeen years together can no longer communicate properly, their emotional isolation does not need to be constantly turned into a thesis either. Cruz and Bardem’s performances often say more than the screenplay later spells out in words. As a result, Bunker’s down-to-earth simplicity works in two ways. On the one hand, it makes the film easy to understand and relate to. The marital crisis here is neither exotic nor melodramatic. It is the gradual drifting apart of two people over many years, and the question of whether it is possible to grow close again to someone whose choices have suddenly begun to feel alien. On the other hand, it is precisely this simplicity that prevents the film from fully exploiting its ideas. Zeller raises complex questions about contemporary life, but too often reduces them to clear moral oppositions. The rich man builds a bunker. A couple who see themselves as progressive are outraged by social injustice while living a privileged life themselves. The house protects them from the outside world. People in a marriage build walls too. All of this becomes clear almost immediately.

Perhaps this is why Bunker may encounter an interesting divide between critics and a broader audience. To a critic, its schematic quality and overly emphatic metaphors may be irritating. To an ordinary viewer, however, that same directness may be an advantage. This is an accessible film about a highly recognisable fear – that one day you might wake up beside someone with whom you have spent almost two decades and realise that you no longer know whether the two of you still want the same life. The humour, as well as Cruz and Bardem, further enhance that accessibility. Even in critical reviews from Venice, their performances remain one of the film’s hardest strengths to dispute. And when the screenplay stops explaining its grand themes and simply leaves the two of them alone together, Bunker becomes considerably more interesting.

Bunker has strong actors, humour, topical themes, and a clear idea. Perhaps even too clear. Critics may justifiably want more ambiguity, greater trust in the audience, and fewer underlined metaphors. But that will not necessarily prevent the film from finding its audience. What seems overly simple to a festival critic may strike another viewer as simply true to life. And perhaps that is Bunker’s most interesting paradox: a film about people building walls between themselves and the world builds almost no wall between itself and its audience. It wants to be understood. Sometimes even too much.

Valdone Rudenkiene Florian Zeller’s Bunker begins not with a bunker, nor even with a sense of impending catastrophe, but with a dinner in London.
