The black comedy-thriller “Bugonia”, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone, became the true sensation of the 2025 Venice Film Festival. The film received six minutes of ovations, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
On August 28, the sci-fi film “Bugonia” was screened in the competition program of the 82nd Venice Film Festival. The premiere was attended by Lanthimos and Stone, as well as their co-stars Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis. The film stunned and fascinated the festival audience, who openly expressed their emotions throughout the two-hour screening. At the end, the crowd gave the creators of the comedy a standing ovation.
The first reviews of “Bugonia” have already appeared online. One of the critics from The Hollywood Reporter shared his impressions, noting that even those familiar with the 22-year-old original will not remain indifferent.
“Viewers who know the 2003 Korean sci-fi comedy written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan will obviously be at a disadvantage in terms of surprises. But for those watching the American remake for the first time, there are plenty of bizarre plot twists, bursts of violence, flashes of absurd comedy, and satirical stings. In any case, the pleasure of watching Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons play the CEO of a major pharmaceutical company and a hippie conspiracist is more than enough reward.”
As a reminder, the story of “Bugonia” revolves around a successful CEO named Michelle, who one day is kidnapped by two deranged conspiracy theorists. They are convinced that she is an alien who has come to destroy planet Earth.
Recently, the first trailer of “Bugonia” appeared online. The film will hit cinemas starting October 30.
